Your body always tries to function in an energy saving manner. That means it always tries to burn as little energy as possible and to save as much energy (in a form of body fat) as possible. If you, for example, walk 1 km every day, with the same speed, your body will adjust in such a way that every day it will be burning less and less calories walking the same distance. Certainly, you will become fitter with every days new walk compared to the time you didn’t walk at all, however, if your goal is body weight reduction, you need to remember that under such circumstances the fat burning effect will reach a limit and after a while can even be re-bounced back to the certain degree.
Similar your body reacts to any attempt of starvation or a calories restricted diet. Under condition of low (or zero) calories intake your metabolism will speed up for a short time, because your body would need to use its own energy resources instead of food to keep itself running, however starting from the second day metabolism will start slowing down and will keep slowing down as long as the same diet is maintained. In fact, short term starvation is successfully used as a weight gaining help by athletes such as weight lifters and bodybuilders (see “How to speed up your metabolism”). In case of any long term starvation, in an addition to slow metabolism your body will burn your muscle mass first (which in it’s own turn will slow down metabolism even further) and will try to keep fat for the last.
If you want to loose weight and be healthy – you MUST eat, but eat in a clever and healthy fashion.
